From Me to You

“Jesus said to another, "Follow Me."
But he said, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."  (Luke 9:59)

If there is one thing (among many) that seems to be hindering the vitality and growth of the church today, it is this:  not that we have too many funerals (although sometimes it feels that way!); rather, it is that we tend to follow Jesus out of convenience, not commitment.

Somewhere in our journey with Jesus, we in and as the church have come to take our walk with Him for granted—or at least, not in the way it is supposed to be.  We’ve       become perhaps too comfortable, and way too self-serving—that is, we see Jesus as the One who came to serve us, rather than the other way around!

That maybe because Jesus does meet our needs, multiplying fish and loaves to feed us; maybe it is because Jesus is always there, with us, hearing and helping us at any moment, everywhere;  and maybe it is because we think that is just His role—“He came not to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for the many” (Mark 10:45).

The problem however isn’t because of Jesus and what He did and does:  it is because we’ve mistaken His purpose in serving us, and taken His love for us as an excuse not to have to serve, sacrifice, and fully follow Him!

“Jesus was saying to them all,
"If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself,
and take up his cross daily and follow Me.”  (Luke 9:22)

Being a disciple of Jesus is a matter of commitment to Him, not convenience to us!

Have you ever said something like the following?

“I’m sorry, I can’t be a church officer—I don’t have the time right now

“When they change the worship time to 10:30, I won’t go—it doesn’t fit in with my Sunday routine.”

“I can’t attend Sunday School—it’s too early.”

“I can’t go on the mission trip—it is just not a good time for me.

Pastor and Evangelist Greg Laurie, in his book The Upside Down Church observes:

“if we train people to be consumers instead of communers, we’ll end up with customers instead of disciples” (p. 42).  Perhaps that’s the root of it all:  when we look at God as our Great CONVENIENCE store, there for us like 7/11, we forget that we’re here and His in Jesus to serve Him 24/7!

Looking forward to continuing to serve Jesus with You, at and as His PPC church,

In Christ,

Beginning June 15 through September 7, we will be going to ONE WORSHIP SERVICE at 10:30am in the Sanctuary.  Sunday School will be at 9am.  This change is being implemented by Session to:  help all of us at and as PPC to be one church together over the summer;  accommodate absences and schedules of the band and choir; and allow us to try some new and creative approaches to worship (the order, elements and style of worship will vary each week).

Food Distribution Center

Report of the Food Distribution Center for April 2014

279 Households, 753 individuals were served 9,389 pounds of food, 33.65 pounds per household, 12.46 pounds per individual.  Approximately 12 to 15 new families are added each distribution.   We are averaging 140 families at each distribution.

Several households are showing up less frequently or not at all.   Note that new households are being added at each distribution.  Our prayer is that those who are not showing up are having their needs supplied.

Despite what the government says about the growing economy, there is still a great need for people to receive our help.  Remember that what we do at the 123 house is not about the volunteers nor is it about the church or about the people served.  Everything we do and say there is about the One Who paid the penalty for our sinfulness and delivered us out of the domain of darkness, transferring us standing in His presence, in the Kingdom of the Son.

The most important thing is the sharing of the good news of great joy for all people, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  We want every man and every woman and every boy and every girl to come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  This alone is our purpose for doing this great work.

Into Jesus Christ Always;
Your Food Distribution Team

Women of the Church

WOMEN OF THE CHURCH - June & July, 2014

The Women of the Church are on a sabbatical for the summer.  No planned events for our group at this writing.  However, if a project comes up and we need help, please say “yes” if you are called to help.

During June, July and August, we do not have any committee meetings or circle meetings.  Beginning September we may only have one day circle and one evening circle.  More about this in the August newsletter.

We are still studying the book entitled “Exploring the Depths of God’s Love” by Charles Stanley.  If you would like to join either of the circles please contact Pat Watts (727-302-0888). It is not a continuous lesson so any month that you would like to join us, we’d love to have you.

If you have any suggestions or ideas for future projects and/or events/programs, please contact one of our present committee members: Ann Carney, Cookie Cottrell, Vicki Danz, Pat Drucker, Pat Edgington, Becky McLaughlin, Terry Odom, Alma Oline, Felicia Ragland, Aristeia Sowa or Pat Watts.

“Serve one another in love” (Gal. 5:13) and “Encourage one another” (I Thess. 5:11; Heb. 3:13)

The apostle Paul was a man who fervently hunted down, persecuted, and killed those who believed in Jesus. Then he met face to face with the resurrected Jesus on the way to Damascus. His life was   totally changed. He then had a burning desire to serve Jesus and to help others believe in Him. Look at 1 Timothy 1:15, 16. It says, "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ     Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so, that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life."

Imagine, Jesus displaying his wonderful attributes through us!! May each of us be a display of God's gracious work in us.

Koinonia Ministry

“Koinonia’s” primary meaning is “fellowship, sharing in common communion”.  The first occurrence of koinonia is in Acts 2:42.  “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer”.  Believers in Christ are to come together in love, faith and encouragement.

Terry Odom is the coordinator for VBS the week of June 9-13 from 8:30 – 12:00 noon with aftercare offered these five days.  The theme is Gangway to Galilee.  If you would like to volunteer the whole week, part of the week or just a day, contact Terry.  (See notice elsewhere in the newsletter.)

Mother’s Day brunch was served between services and the men prepared the brunch for the women.  Thank you guys!   We will also be having a brunch, between services and the women will be preparing and serving on Father’s Day/VBS Celebration on Sunday, June 15th.

Praise Kids and the Adult Bible Study on Sunday evenings will take a break until September.  Look for further information in the August newsletter.

Members of our Koinonia Ministry are: Cookie Cottrell, Vicki Danz, Zinet Kalis, Sandy Moore, Terry Odom, Alma Oline, Shirley Phillips, Felicia Ragland, Laurie Smith, Patti Strong and Dave Taylor.  Chairpersons are: Ruth Gey, Pat Mancini and Pat Watts.

Scripture commands us to be devoted to one another. Romans 12:10 states, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves”. NIV

Library News

The Declaration of Independence was signed 229 years ago July 4th, 1776; 216 years ago the Constitution was signed; and England recognized us as a country in 1783, or 222 years ago. Most people will stick with the July 4th, 1776 date.

So, it seems only fitting that we read about our country, including books which will add to our faith in God by our ancestors' examples through the years. Here is a partial list of books touching on this subject in our library:

+Give 'em Watts, Boys (Dave Taylor, a member of our congregation)

+From Sea to Shining Sea and From Sea to Shining Sea for Children: Discovering God's Plan for America in Her First Half-Century of Independence 1787-1837 (Peter Marshall)

+Let's Thank God for Freedom (Easy board book by Amy Beveridge)

+Listen for the Whippoorwill: Harriet Tubman (Dave and Neta Jackson)

+The Spiritual Journey of George Washington (Biography by Janice T. Connel)

+Abraham Lincoln The Man and His Faith (Biography by G. Frederick Owen)

+George Washington's Sacred Fire (Biography by Peter A. Lilibeck, Jerry Newcombe)

Also, thanks to Dave Taylor, the library has the Drive Thru History: American History series of DVDs which he has been using for his Sunday School class.

What's New At PPCNews

We try to stay on top of prayer requests and concerns.  If you know of someone who is ill in our church family, please let the office know.  Even if the office is closed you can still leave a voice mail.  If you have a pastoral emergency, you can always leave a voice mail at the Manse at 727-368-5588.
In the event that Pastor Carl is on vacation, we always record the substitute’s name and telephone
number on our outgoing voice mail message. Thank you for your help.

Important Policy Change

As a result of changes in our staffing, PPC facilities will no longer be open in the evening for meetings or groups on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and all-day on Saturdays.  If your meeting or group is affected by this new policy, you need to contact the church office to reschedule your use of the facilities to Tuesday or Thursday evenings.  If your group can’t change to meet on the nights when PPC is now open, you will need to contact Pastor Carl or find another location.

Please Help Keep God's Facilities Nice!

Please do not put paper flyers or announcements on the walls! We have bulletin boards for our various ministries and groups to use to post items. If you need something posted, please check with the appropriate ministry or group or the church office.
