From Me to You

“Jesus said ‘Come!’ And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.”
(Matthew 14:29)

PPC is going to Trinidad!

A team from our church will be going July 12-20 to partner with Pastor Anthony’s church and with other believers in San Fernando to share the Gospel, evangelize the lost and help start new house churches where there are none.  Starting now, our PPC team is being trained to raise partners for prayer and financial support, lead others to Christ using 5 different methods, conduct initial discipleship of new believers, and gather new believers together to become reproducing congregations.  This sounds incredible, and certainly something most people in the pew would never even think about attempting;  so what makes our team, any and all of us, want to do that—leave the comfort of our homes and pews to share Jesus with people way across the Caribbean sea?

Well, what made Peter get up and get out of his boat?
The answer, in short, is in the phrase:  he “came toward Jesus.”

Our desire to know Jesus better, show, serve and share Him more, is what moves us to surrender our wills, obey God’s Word, exercise our faith, overcome our fears and follow Him anywhere, all the time.  As Paul wrote:

“I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of

knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things,

and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ…

that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection.” (Philippians 3:8-10)

We will end this month (March 31) celebrating Jesus and His RESURRECTION—His victory over our sin, death and the devil.   Before that, at our annual MISSIONS CONFERENCE (March 17), we will celebrate His calling in and for each of our lives—the power of His resurrection to make us His witnesses (Acts 1:8), His ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20), His disciples who GO and make disciples (Matthew 28:19).

Going, to show, serve and share Jesus, is the acid test of our faith in and faithfulness to Him.

Are you willing to go—across the street or around the world—to come closer to Jesus, and help others do so, too?

I hope so—I pray so!  I pray that Jesus will continue to be glorified in and through each of us, and all of us together, as we are, by the power of His new life, even more, Jesus’ church in Jesus’ mission!

In Christ,

Please plan to attend the upcoming Pasadena Presbyterian Missions Conference on March 17, 2013. Mission oriented groups will set up displays in the Fellowship Hall. Plan to visit with them and make them feel welcomed and learn of their ministries. A single worship service at 10:30 am will follow. Pastor Anthony Oliver will be preaching and Racquel Whipple (the same as last year) will provide special music. A lunch will be provided in the Fellowship Hall following the worship
service. Please pray and plan to attend!
Paul wrote to the church in Corinth the following words in  1 Corinthians15:58, "Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." We should encourage each other to follow these special words. David also had some similar words of

challenge in Psalm 62:1,2. They say, "My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken." The condition of the world around us demands that we as

people who trust in Jesus have to remain firm and always give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord.

Food Distribution Center

January 2013

181families, 513 Individuals, 7,500 pounds of food

New families continue to come and to register at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church Distribution Center.  New families mean more food and more food means that we need more funds to purchase the food with.  The closing of many of the Sweetbay grocery stores means that there will be less food available.  Pray that God will provide both food and money so that we can continue to meet the needs of hungry people.

I write this article, after having spent about six hours at the 1st pantry distribution in February, where God showed up BIG TIME.  A lady came and asked to come in early because she had to go to the hospital to see her sick mother.  Two of our team prayed with her for her mother.  The lady came back and told us that her mother got better at the time of prayer.  The woman was able to swallow and to eat.  They had planned on putting a feeding tube in her.

A man came for prayer in the 123 House and afterwards came outside to the prayer tent.  He had already been prayed for.  He told us that his back was hurting.  Then he asked to help us lift boxes.  When we explained that might not be good for him, the Spirit led us to pray for this man’s back.  Once again God performed.  He told us that the man had certain problems in his lower back and then pointed out that his neck had been hurt also.  We began to pray, until one of our numbers was moved to ask him if there was someone he had not forgiven.  The Lord touched his heart.  He prayed for forgiveness and assurance that he was and is a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.

God wants to do imaginably much more than you or I can even imagine and to show us that He loves the people that come for food.  They need spiritual food more than physical food.  God has placed us here to minister to the needs of the people.

Yes, we need volunteers.  You are the volunteer that we need.  All you need to do is to show up and the Lord will do the rest through you.  Let Gene Hammond, Larry Hendry, Pastor Bob and others know and we will invite you to become a member of this team.

God Bless and Keep You;

The Food Distribution Team

Fellowship Ministry

Saturday, February 16th at 1:00 p.m. we assisted the Women of the Church in their Annual Valentine’s Tea/Luncheon.  We had 35 men and women in attendance.  Excellent entertainment.  Eddie Hoehn and his 13 year old son Tyler had a very inspirational hour of song accompanied by their acoustical guitars.  Tyler also favored us with his very capable mandolin playing.  A fun afternoon for all who attended.  Good food, fun and fellowship!

Our ministry continues to help, when we are able, with the Parent’s Night Out gatherings – the next one being February 23rd from 6:00-9:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall.  We can always use more help!  The one for March is scheduled for the 23rd.

Fellowship Ministry now meets the first Monday of every month in the Fellowship Hall at 2:00 p.m.  If you are interested in

joining this ministry we welcome you and any suggestions you might have.  We will not be meeting in March but plan to meet, April, May & June.  Our next meeting will be April 1st (and that’s no joke) in the Fellowship Hall at 2:00 pm.

“Koinonia’s” primary meaning is “fellowship, sharing in common, communion”.   Christian fellowship is a key aspect of the Christian life.  Believers in Christ are to come together in love, faith and encouragement.  This is the essence of Koinonia.

We had a “whole lot of love” being shared in the preschool ministry during the month of February. We celebrated our love for our family and friends, our love for Jesus, and Jesus’ love for us. We had a beautiful service in the Sanctuary to mark the beginning of Lent. The lesson taught us to be proud to be a Christian, and the cross was a sign to the world that wanted to share the love of Jesus. The children were then called forward one at a time to receive the crosses they had made. Each child was called forward with these words “………….Jesus has called you by name.”  When the child heard their name they came forward and were asked if they would wear their cross as a sign to the world of their love for Jesus. When they

responded the cross was hung on their neck. The spirit of the Lord was truly present in the Sanctuary, as each child, in awe of what was happening came forward to receive their cross and pledge to show the world their love for Jesus. I was so blessed to lay hands on each child and tell them that Jesus loved them. I was reminded of the open heart, innocent

acceptance, and faith without question that children have. Let us together pray that each of us may forever embrace the love of Jesus with an open heart. We ended the service singing “I Love You Lord”. Their acceptance of Jesus reminds me of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians in which he writes, “We live by faith not by sight.” (Corinthians II, 5:7) May we all walk by faith that is as innocent as the faith of a child. Join me in praying that the seeds that are planted in the preschool ministry of

Pasadena Presbyterian Church, be deeply rooted and produce a lifetime of love and commitment to Jesus Christ. May each and every one of you have a blessed Lenten Season, and be brought closer to our Lord and Savior, who has redeemed the world and saved us by His Grace.

Library News

The Apostle Peter says in I Peter 3:15 that we should "...sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you ..." and your library has   resources to help you explain why you believe that Jesus is your Lord and Savior.

Josh McDowell is a Christian writer, apologist and evangelist who was an agnostic in college and decided to write a paper disproving Christianity. However, as he looked at the facts, he became a believer. He has written over 100 books. Our library has some of them, including Reasons Skeptics Should Consider Christianity, Guide to Understanding Your Bible, The Resurrection Factor, and Evidence that Demands a Verdict.

Lee Strobel, Christian author and pastor, wrote about his journey to becoming a Christian in The Case for Christ: A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus . The book includes summaries of interviews with 13 Evangelical authors "defending their view of the historical reliability of the New Testament," according to Wikipedia. He was a journalist with The Chicago Tribune and an atheist when he decided to look into Christian claims, according to his website.  In addition to that book, we have The Case For Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger and The Case for Easter: A Journalist Investigates the Evidence for the Resurrection.

Also available: What the Bible is All About, Dr. Henrietta C. Mears; Understanding the Bible, John R. W. Stott; C.S. Lewis on Scripture, Michael J. Christensen; What Was God Doing on the Cross?, Alister E. McGrath; Jesus' Final Warning: Hearing the Savior's Voice in the Midst of Chaos, Dr. David Jeremiah and others.
